'Powre Star', powerless Politician?

The man who showed much promise, just over a year ago, when he took the stage at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre by storm with his towering presence during the launch his Jana Sena Party, is now being viewed as a meek voice with little or no steam.

In fact, the crowds that cheered their 'hero' that day as he promised to "question the governments (both at the Centre and in the state of Andhra Pradesh) on their actions" - even as he came out in support of Narendra Modi and addressed Chandrababu Naidu as "good man" - are no longer sure if the star still has the same drive to take the powers-that-be head on.

Their hopelessness, perhaps, isn't without reason. And that's evident from a quick scan of Pawan Kalyan's Twitter account - sadly the only medium through which he engages in a political dialogue these days. On August 16, the man who once threatened to keep roaring, was found making a sheepish opposition to Naidu's land acquisition move. "I request (the) TDP government not to use 'Land Acquisition Act' on unwilling farmers of multi-cropped land in capital region," he tweeted. Is a "request" good enough, Mr Power Star?

Three days later on August 19, when he delivered yet another of his "political messages" (read: tweet), the tone had subdued even further. He suddenly seemed to feel that displacement was natural in any development anywhere. His effort to throw in a line that read: "but development with least damage completely lies in the wisdom of rulers," thus, failed to impress many.

What happened to the abhineta-turned-neta, who during a public gathering in Thullur (in Guntur) last year had the gathering break into a thunderous applause as he said: "If any injustice is done to anyone, I will stand by you as a political party. If I do not do that, you can question me"? Was that just another politician behind the mike - this is the question many are heard asking now.

On the contentious issue of special status for AP too, the Tollywood biggie has failed to don his other role with much success. Much like Modi, who maintained a stoic silence on the matter, one of Pawan Kalyan's tweets made it clear that he wasn't willing to speak about it. His reason: the 'volatile' situation created after a person committed suicide seeking special status.

And that's not all. Despite being challenged to speak out on the cash-for-vote scam by rival party YSR Congress, all Pawan Kalyan did was maintain a deafening silence. Instead, he targeted YSRCP in his response. A job not so well done? That's what the audience seems to believe!

Not surprising then that both Modi and Naidu, who went all out to court the T-town star prior to the 2014 polls, aren't particularly bothered with his online statements anymore. Then, there is also a fresh political game at play. The TDP and the BJP are hoping to be able to use the hero's "services" for the ensuing municipal elections. "It is okay for Pawan Kalyan to say what he has in his mind," is all TDP leader Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu said when asked about the tweets recently.

Anyway, Mr Actor appears to be happier sharing photographs of him cultivating vegetables on his social networking account, than making these lackluster political comments. Also, not to forget the publicity of his forthcoming film "Sardaar Gabbar Singh", where Pawan garu is sure to be found roaring! In real life, however, it looks like the Power Star is only capable of emitting a few squeaks!
